Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh and men's basketball coach Juwan Howard accepted 10 percent reductions to their base salaries, the university announced on Monday night.
Athletic director Warde Manuel also accepted a similar cut that was proposed to senior-level administrators and head coaches.
The reductions were announced after the Michigan's Board of Regents approved the 2021 fiscal year budget. The vote was 5-2, according to MLive.com.
The pay reductions begin on Aug. 1 and run through the end of the fiscal year.
Manuel recently told the Board of Regents that the athletic department projects a $26.1 million operating deficit in the upcoming fiscal year. That amount was based on projections of $135.8 million in revenue and $161.9 million in expenses.
The deficit issues are largely due to losses sustained because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Manuel proposed a budget last Thursday that included $6 million in pay, salary and benefit reductions, according to MLive.
Harbaugh was slated to make $8.05 million to total compensation, according to the Detroit Free Press. However, his base salary is just $605,000, according to MLive. It is his base salary that will be reduced over the 11-month span.
Howard was scheduled to receive $2.1 million in compensation, according to both newspapers. MLive.com says his base salary is $400,000.
Manuel was due to make $990,000 in salary during the 2019-20 fiscal year, according to MLive. He took a 5 percent cut in April.
Michigan also announced other reductions, including a 7.5 cut in salary for employees making between $100,001 and $150,000 and a 5 percent reduction for staff members making between $50,000 and 100,000. Staffers earning less than $50,000 will not have their pay reduced.
