Patrick Kane will make his second attempt at reaching 400 career goals Sunday night when the Chicago Blackhawks host the Detroit Red Wings in the second game of a back-to-back set between the longtime rivals.
Kane is on the verge of becoming the fourth Blackhawk to score 400 goals for the club, joining Hall of Famers Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita along with Steve Larmer. He also is on the verge of becoming the 100th player in NHL history to reach the milestone and 10th active player.
After scoring a goal in each of his previous three games, Kane took five shots on goal when the Blackhawks were handed a 5-3 loss Saturday night. Alex DeBrincat, Dominik Kubalik and Mattias Janmark scored in a game where the Blackhawks only drew one power play.
"It was a weird game," Chicago coach Jeremy Colliton said. "Overall, we did a lot of good things, created more than enough offensively. Had a bit of trouble breaking through to score, to convert and they converted their chances. (I'm) grateful for the chance to get right back at it (and) do it again tomorrow -- but do it better."
Despite the loss, the Blackhawks are 9-3-1 in their last 13 games since Jan. 29. In that span, Kane has seven goals and 15 assists.
"It wasn't our best effort," Janmark said. "We got lots to improve. We got another game (Sunday). We just gotta go out and win that game. We're not going to win every game, we gotta handle some adversity."
Detroit is playing better of late with three wins in its last four games following a dreadful start. The Red Wings have scored 10 goals in two games. Detroit had only scored more than three goals on three occasions.
"We've scored five goals in back-to-back games now, and it's something we've really struggled with," Detroit's Frans Nielsen said. "For sure it feels good."
Nielsen gave the Red Wings plenty to feel good about with a goal and an assist, Bobby Ryan scored his team-leading sixth goal while Darren Helm, Christian Djoos and Evgeny Svechnikov also scored while Jonathan Bernier made 33 saves in his fourth straight start, including two point-blank stops on Kane.
Djoos scored the most notable goal of Saturday's game, given Detroit's struggles on the power play. It was the Red Wings' fifth power-play goal of the season, their first in 15 games, and it ended an 0-for-40 drought.
Detroit's 14 games without a power-play goal were tied for the second-longest drought in the NHL expansion era (since 1967-68), joining with the 1997-98 Toronto Maple Leafs and 2015-16 Ottawa Senators.
"That's an area of the game that we haven't won very many special teams battles, so I think that was a huge part of the game," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said.
Detroit is trying to win three straight for the first time since Nov. 8-12, 2019, and will do so without Dylan Larkin, who is out for the weekend due to a lower-body injury.
Despite Saturday's loss, Chicago leads the season series 4-1.
