CAIRO, Egypt: Egyptian authorities have prohibited swimming in a stretch of the Red Sea after an Australian woman was killed by a shark near the resort of Hurghada.
The unidentified Australian, a 68-year-old woman, died after the attack at the Nile Hospital in Hurghada, an Egyptian health official said.
Following the attack, the governor of the Red Sea province reportedly closed the area for three days, banning all diving, snorkeling, wind surfing, kite sailing and swimming. Fishing boats were also banned from operating off Hurghada.
Popular Egyptian Red Sea tourist resorts include Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, often populated with European tourists.
The area is also a popular diving location, known worldwide for its coral reefs.
