Less than a year after hiring him, Michigan awarded coach Dusty May with a multi-year contract extension to stave off any chance that his alma mater might pursue him this offseason.
Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel announced the contract Friday before the 12th-ranked Wolverines hosted No. 14 Michigan State with first place in the Big Ten on the line. The Spartans (22-5, 13-3) posted a 75-62 victory over the Wolverines (20-6, 12-3) to take sole possession of first place in the Big Ten.
'(May's) commitment to this university and the success of the men's basketball program has far exceeded our expectations and makes us all excited for what the future holds,' Manuel said in a statement. 'I look forward to Dusty, Anna and his family remaining a part of the fabric of this university and community for many years to come.'
May added in a statement that he was grateful to the administration for their support.
'My goal is to bring continued success to this historic program,' May said. 'We cannot reach that goal without the hard work that my staff and players put into this program. We have built a solid foundation; however, there is much more work to be done. I look forward to those challenges and what the future holds for me and my family in Ann Arbor.'
May, 48, took Florida Atlantic on a shocking run to the Final Four in 2023 and compiled a 126-69 record there in six seasons (2018-24) before replacing Juwan Howard at Michigan.
Notably, he is also a Hoosier State native and an Indiana alum who was a student manager under legendary coach Bob Knight. The Hoosiers need to replace coach Mike Woodson, who is stepping down at the end of the season, and May was thought to be a prime target.
