Selected No. 9 overall by the Mavericks in the 2017 NBA Draft, guard Dennis Smith Jr. is heading back to Dallas on a one-year contract, agent Daniel Hazan of Hazan Sports Management told ESPN on Thursday.
Smith, 27, spent his rookie season with the Mavs but was traded to the New York Knicks in January 2019 as part of the deal that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas. In his first NBA campaign, Smith was named to the All-Rookie Team after averaging a career-high 15.2 points in 69 games (all starts).
The former North Carolina State standout spent last season with Real Madrid in the Euroleague following stints with the Detroit Pistons, Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets and Brooklyn Nets.
Over seven NBA seasons, Smith has averaged 9.7 points, 4.2 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 326 regular-season games (152 starts).
