Andrew Copp scored with 1:33 remaining in overtime as the host Detroit Red Wings pulled out a 4-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in a battle of Eastern Conference division leaders on Monday night.
Copp took a feed from Alex DeBrincat and pushed the puck past goalie Frederik Andersen as Detroit avenged a 5-2 loss to Carolina last month. DeBrincat scored his team-high 24th goal and had two assists as the Red Wings won their fourth straight.
James van Riemsdyk and Albert Johansson also scored for Detroit. Johansson's goal was his first of the season. John Gibson made 31 saves.
Shayne Gostisbehere, Jackson Blake and Seth Jarvis scored for Carolina, which erased a 3-0 deficit in the third period. Andersen made 14 saves.
The Red Wings struck quickly after Carolina's Jaccob Slavin was sent to the penalty box 37 seconds into the game for tripping. van Riemsdyk backhanded a rebound past Andersen with Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond picking up the assists.
Detroit made it 2-0 1:28 into the second period on DeBrincat's goal. Copp backkhanded the puck away from the boards to DeBrincat, who skated into the slot and beat Andersen on the short side. Ben Chiarot picked up the second assist.
Johansson scored at 4:54 of the period. Patrick Kane passed the puck from the point to Johansson, who fired the puck under Andersen's glove. DeBrincat collected the other assist.
The Hurricanes took advantage of a power play to break through at 4:44 of the third period. Blake ripped a wrist shot from the right circle past Gibson. Taylor Hall and Alexander Nikishin picked up the assists.
Jarvis scored his short-handed goal on a 2-on-1 break with Sebastian Aho setting him up.
Raymond was called for a slashing penalty with 4:42 remaining. Chiarot was whistled for high sticking 30 seconds later, giving Carolina a two-man advantage.
Gostisbehere then tied the game with a shot from the point with 3:01 left.
