Minnesota Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin's lower-body injury could jeopardize his chances of joining Team Sweden at the upcoming Winter Olympics.
Wild coach John Hynes confirmed Thursday that Brodin, 32, is week-to-week with the nagging injury.
'It didn't happen in one game,' Hynes said, per The Athletic. 'It's something that I think has been building up a little bit.'
Brodin recorded an assist in Monday's 5-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils. He has 15 points (three goals, 12 assists) and a plus-13 plus/minus rating in 42 games this season, his 14th with Minnesota.
The men's ice hockey competition at the Winter Games begins on Feb. 11 in Milan, Italy. NHL players are taking part for the first time since 2014.
Hynes said it's too soon to discuss whether Brodin will be healthy enough to participate.
'We'll cross that bridge when we come to it,' Hynes said. 'That'd be between (GM) Billy (Guerin) and Jonas. Right now, we'll just see where he's at and exactly what it is. There needs to be more things looked at in order for us to get to that point. Maybe he's ready before the Olympics; maybe he's not. We don't know at this point out in time. But let's let it play out a little bit and see truly what's going on.'
Brodin has won three medals with Sweden at the World Championships, including a gold in 2017 and bronzes in 2024 and 2025.
Potential replacements for Sweden if Brodin is unavailable include the Edmonton Oilers' Mattias Ekholm, the Boston Bruins' Hampus Lindholm and the Detroit Red Wings' Simon Edvinsson.
